Chelsea's 3-0 victory against Barcelona ended their 53-game winning streak under Hansi Flick

The Blaugrana are in a challenging position to guarantee a top eight finish and direct qualification to the knockout stages after having previously lost to PSG earlier in the competition and being held to a draw against Club Brugge.

53-game run comes to an end

In addition to hurting the team's prospects of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League the 3-0 loss to Chelsea broke a record that had been in place for nearly a year.

In fact the Blaugrana's 53 game goal scoring streak came to an end with the loss.

Hansi Flick's team have not ended a game without scoring since their 1-0 loss to Leganes on December 15 2024. At Stamford Bridge that run was broken.

The Catalans had to play with a man down for about fifty five minutes last night after Ronald Araujo was sent off with a second yellow card in the first half.

Chelsea who had dominated the match even before the red card became much more dominant and prevented Flick's team from regaining any ground. As a result their 53-game goal scoring streak came to an end.

Barcelona had scored in 53 straight games 33 of which were in La Liga. The club is striving for the goal of scoring in 37 consecutive league games which Ernesto Valverde's Barcelona accomplished in 2019 and the domestic streak is still going strong.

Therefore in order to beat the current record the La Liga winners need to score against Alaves Atletico Madrid, Real Betis, Osasuna and Villarreal.

More streaks fall

In the meantime Barcelona's 24-game scoring streak in the UEFA Champions League came to an end with their loss to Chelsea.

The Catalans haven't failed to score in a Champions League match since November 2023 when they lost 1-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk under Xavi Hernandez.

Additionally under Flick's guidance it is the first time in 19 games that the side has failed to score in a Champions League match.

This was indeed the first Champions League game in which a side under Flick's coaching did not score.

Additionally it's the biggest Champions League defeat in Flick's coaching tenure. He only suffered one defeat in 18 competition games while playing for Bayern Munich.

Flick has coached 19 games since taking up at Barça. He has already suffered five losses but never by a three goal margin.
