Czech teen Bartunkova upsets No. 3 seed Blinkova at Ostrava Open

Nikola Bartunkova celebrates her victory over Anna Blinkova in Ostrava.

Czech player Nikola Bartunkova defeated third-seeded Anna Blinkova 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the WTA Ostrava Open. The 19-year-old home favorite needed 85 minutes to secure the win on the indoor hard court.

Bartunkova converted five of eight break points against the struggling Russian. Blinkova entered the match winless in 2026 after three prior defeats. The loss extends her skid to four straight matches.

The victory marks Bartunkova's eighth win of the season. She rides momentum from the Australian Open where she upset world No. 9 Belinda Bencic in the second round. Bartunkova also beat Daria Kasatkina before falling to Elise Mertens in the third round.

Ranked 108th, Bartunkova claimed six ITF singles titles last year. She reached a career-high 108 in singles this week. Her aggressive baseline game produced 25 winners against Blinkova.

Blinkova, seeded third at No. 75, absorbed 32 unforced errors. The 26-year-old Russian lost her serve four times in the match. She cited fatigue from a heavy schedule as a factor.

Ostrava marks Bartunkova's first WTA main draw on home courts this year. Fans packed the center court to cheer the local product from TK Sparta Prague academy. She eyes a deep run in the 250-level event.

Next up for Bartunkova comes the round of 16 against either Brenda Fruhvirtova or a qualifier. The Czech holds a 57-19 record in 2026 across all levels. Her Ostrava campaign continues Thursday.
