Drivers discuss it.
Yes, it's amusing. At last week's driver intros, (Christopher) Bell and I were discussing this," Byron stated at a press conference on Friday. "It seems like the longer we do this, the longer it takes to sort of get into the meat of the season and what truly constitutes the tracks and our season.
This year has felt really long to me as I've been settling into the season's routine. Although I wouldn't consider it a "real racetrack," these locations are crucial to the skill and quickness required to win a title.
To his point, it's reasonable to argue that the season doesn't truly start until this month with a short track in Phoenix, an intermediate in Las Vegas, and whatever we want to call Darlington these days. The season starts with a superspeedway a superintermediate and a road course.
Even with this playoff structure, every race has consequences so Byron would definitely prefer to be in the top five after three races rather than outside the top 10.
"To answer your question about where we stand, I believe that the feeling that we've lost a few points over the past few weeks is what's frustrating for us," Byron stated. I crashed in Atlanta the week before, you know. After we sustained substantial damage, I crashed, which revealed a few things. Then, during the last run last week, I thought we gave up a few.
"Those seem to sting a bit more than they used to, in my opinion. We started strong and made it a little bit easier to achieve our aim of winning the regular season championship last year. However, for the moment, we have simply been mediocre. On average, we have scored between 25 and 26 points. On average we would like to score between 35 and 40. Therefore it is obviously below average at the moment but I am confident that we will see what we have this weekend.
Tyler Reddick's three straight wins to start the season have made his quest for a regular season title even more difficult. For starters, Byron won the same number of games last year—three—which is typically regarded as the average strong season.
Wins also add up to 15 extra points this season giving Reddick a nearly one-and-a-half-point lead over teammate Bubba Wallace who is in second place. Byron trails Reddick by more than two complete victories.
Byron remarked, "Yeah, look, they've hit a home run on two drafting tracks." "It's amazing that they scored the points that they did. It will be a big benefit if you say at the beginning of the season, "Man, if we could score 40 to 50 points on drafting tracks."
They have so gained a significant edge in those drafting tracks. The fact that Tyler raced so well at COTA didn't surprise me in the slightest. However they performed incredibly well and they had a lot of momentum. Therefore I believe that it's not really about looking at other people for us on the 24 team. We are examining ourselves. Shoot you know wish we could have had a few things back if we reach race 26 and that gap remains.
However, there are a lot of situations in those first few weeks, and you have 26 weeks to resolve them. I believe there will be a lot of ups and downs during the next 20 to 22 weeks.
