Jannik Sinner beats Carlos Alcaraz in Monte Carlo to tie Novak Djokovic's record

Carlos Alcaraz had a great start to the 2026 season winning the Australian Open and completing the career Grand Slam. It's been all Jannik Sinner since then

Sinner won the Indian Wells and Miami Masters in March completing the Sunshine Double in response to his rival's historic win. It has always been hard for players to go from the hard courts of Miami to the clay courts of the Monte Carlo Masters but not for Sinner.

This week the Italian stormed through the draw in Monaco losing only one set to Tomas Machac. He beat the defending champion Alcaraz in the final on Sunday 7-6(5) 6-3 to win his fourth Masters 1000 title in a row. With this win the Italian also took back the top spot in the world rankings while Alcaraz fell to No. 2.

There is only one week between Miami and Monte Carlo and the time change and surface change make it very rare for the same player to win both in the same year. Sinner's win on Sunday made him only the second player ever to win Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo in the same season. The first was Novak Djokovic in 2015.

This is Sinner's first Masters 1000 title on clay courts. He won the whole hard court set with his win at Indian Wells. He will play in two more clay Masters in Madrid and Rome to get ready for his first chance to win the Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

Fans are used to seeing high-quality matches on Sundays but the final wasn't one of those because the wind in Monaco made it hard for both players. After trading early breaks because they were both having trouble with their serves Sinner won the first set in a tiebreak after Alcaraz double-faulted on set point.

At 3-1 the Spaniard took the lead in the second set but Sinner came back and won five games in a row to win the title in straight sets.

Sinner has now won eight Masters 1000 titles. He just needs to win in Madrid and Rome to complete the set.
