Jackson Merrill hits a walk-off double to finish the Padres comeback

The San Diego Padres had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning against Seattle Mariners closer Andres Munoz. Fernando Tatis Jr. came in to pinch hit for Jake Cronenworth when the Padres were down 6-2 to the Mariners. Tatis Jr. did not start the game. Tatis Jr. worked the count full against Munoz and hit a deep line drive to right field. This led to a sacrifice fly and Manny Machado tagged up from third base and scored to make the score 6-3. Luis Campusano who came in for Freddy Fermin early in the game after he took a foul ball off his catcher’s mask hit a single to left-center field to make the score 6-4 with runners on the corners. Ramon Laureano came up next and hit the first pitch of his at-bat into left field which brought Ty France home from third base and made the score 6-5.

Jose Ferrer took Munoz's place and had to face Jackson Merrill. The center fielder who is in his third year hit a line drive double on a 2-2 pitch that went just inside the third base bag and rolled down the line and into the corner where Seattle left fielder Randy Arozarena couldn't get to it. Campusano and Laureano ran around the bases and scored to end the Mariners' game 7-6. This was the Padres' seventh straight win.

San Diego came into the game against Seattle on a six game winning streak. Randy Vasquez who was arguably their best starting pitcher three weeks into the season was on the mound. The Padres hitters faced Emerson Hancock who is also off to a good start this year. But after beating Bryan Woo the night before the Friar Faithful were sure that San Diego would find a way to make the win streak seven.

After the second inning it was clear that Vasquez wasn't as sharp as he had been in previous games and the Padres hitters were having trouble figuring out how to deal with Hancock. After Dominic Canzone walked hit a single and a double in the second inning Vasquez gave up two runs making the Mariners' score 2-0. In the fourth inning Vazquez got into trouble again when Arozarena hit a double to start the inning. He got two outs against the next two batters but then he walked two batters in a row which loaded the bases. Brendan Donovan hit a single to right field next which brought in two runs and made the score 4-0 for Seattle.

The Seattle right hander gave San Diego a hard time for the first 3 2/3 innings. Xander Bogaerts broke the seal with a single with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and the Padres didn't get a hit until then. One batter later Machado lined out and the inning was over.

In the top of the fifth inning Ron Marinaccio took over for Vasquez who had given up four runs on five hits four walks and six strikeouts over four innings. The Mariners were not nice to Marinaccio when he arrived. Arozarena hit a single with one out and stole second base. Then Luke Raley hit a two-run home run to right-center field making the score 6-0 for Seattle. Raley had a good night against the San Diego pitchers getting four hits: two singles, a double and a home run.

Bogaerts hit a two run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning which made the score 6-2 and put the Padres on the board. Merrill made an amazing catch in center field to take a home run away from Julio Rodriguez in the top of the third inning. He then hit a single with one out and Bogaerts brought him in with a home run which was the 200th of his career. Hancock only had one bad thing happen to him that night: he gave up two runs on four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts over six innings.

San Diego will try to finish the sweep of Seattle on Thursday at 5:40 p.m. at Petco Park.
