Angel Reese doesn't always enjoy talking to the media. The WNBA star will even say that she has missed interviews and paid fines to the league instead of dealing with the press when she doesn't want to.
"The media has not always been great for me." And I'll pay a fine. I'll get a fine, especially in the WNBA. "Before I have to go to the media and feel like my back is against the wall," Reese said on Michelle Obama's podcast last week.
Michelle Obama agreed with Reese's point of view. She had already compared ESPN to a reality TV show and told the WNBA star to do what was best for her.
The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for WNBA players says that they have to talk to the media after games. Players who break the rule could be fined $10,000.
Reese is willing to do it, and Obama seems to be pushing her to do it when she needs to.I think the hard part is the social media part. But that's true for everyone. We've talked about this on our show before; it just happens all the time. "These young kids today, what they have to go through, what they have to be able to withstand, because social media is such a huge part of the world,"
Obama said about Angel Reese and the media. There is hate. But now the hate is always with you in your room and on your phone. You can't tell these kids to turn it off for any reason though because that's how they make their living. I mean they are expected to stay interested now. That makes it feel even worse I think. But I think as you said that's happening in sports for both men and women. It's just harder to deal with other people's horrible horrible opinions.
Michelle Obama made it clear that she doesn't like ESPN very much. It's all a study of society. They think that sports is better than reality TV but I'm like "It's the same thing." "Listening to ESPN for an hour is like watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta you know?" Obama said. It's the same drama and they're fighting and yelling at each other you know?"
Michelle Obama is right about social media but not talking to reporters is wrong.
It's understandable that WNBA players need to stay off social media for their mental health.
But players shouldn't be told to skip media interviews after games. The WNBA is getting bigger. More attention means more criticism. That's just how it is for professional athletes.
You can't want all the attention and not have people look at you, too. The media is always watching professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and other sports. WNBA players also need to get used to that as their league gets bigger.
Michelle Obama should tell Angel Reese to be a strong voice in the media and not skip interviews.
