Katherine Legge calls double attempt a calamity of errors after tough Coke 600

She joins Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch and Kyle Larson on the list.

Her best Indy 500 qualifying run was cut short after 17 laps in her fifth start in the historic race. She crashed at the exit of Turn 2 when Ryan Hunter-Reay spun but avoided a direct hit with him on the backstretch. Legge hit the inside wall and her race was over finishing 33rd (last) in the 110th running of the Indy 500.

After only 42.5 miles of racing at the Brickyard she was on a plane to Charlotte Motor Speedway. She drove the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet and stayed out of trouble for most of the race.

But soon after the start of Stage 3 she was limping to the apron with an issue. A few moments later the right-front wheel came off and brought out a caution.

The team didn’t give up and Legge soldiered on to finish 31st 12 laps behind race winner Daniel Suarez. In the two races she went 361 laps or 541.5 miles a combined 585 miles. The goal was 1,100. Rain also cut short the Coke 600 by 27 laps from its scheduled distance.

Legge was not shy about expressing how tough a day it was after the race.I think the highlight for me is just being able to lay down tonight finally because I am super tired," she said with a laugh during an interview with NASCAR on Prime.

But the opportunity to do it, the opportunity to try to do it, is the highlight. We’re gonna regroup and think about it and reflect to see what we could’ve done differently. It was like a catastrophic error. At the end of the day I don't think I made too many mistakes so there's positives to take from it as well.

She just wishes the car she had at the end of the Coke 600 was the one she started the race with, as the team made big gains on the setup in the last-half of the race.”
