Caitlin Clark sets WNBA assist record in Fever game vs. Valkyries

Indiana Fever star guard became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 500 career assists doing so Thursday May 28 against the Golden State Valkyries.

The 24 year old hit the 1,000-point scoring milestone earlier this season and entered Thursday's matchup with 1,102 points and 497 career assists. The milestone comes after.

Clark the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft out of Iowa set the assists mark so quickly it’s hard to imagine another player topping her.

She outran Sue Bird a legend of the Seattle Storm who had 500 assists in 82 games. New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu did it in 84. It was just Clark’s 59th career game.

Clark is now officially the league's all-time assists per game leader. She averaged 8.6 assists per game in her three year career to win the contest. That's the best average in league history, but it was said she'd have to get to 500 career assists to firmly solidify her place in the all-time ranks.

That assist was Clark’s third of the game and came on a highlight dime to Sophie Cunningham in the second quarter.

Which WNBA records does Caitlin Clark hold?

Seven games into the season, Clark already has made plenty of changes to the WNBA's record book.

Clark became the quickest player in WNBA history to reach 1,000-plus points 250-plus rebounds and 250-plus assists when the Fever lost their season opener to the Dallas Wings on May 9. Clark reached the milestone in just 54 career games breaking Diana Taurasi’s previous record of 62 games.

That record-setting performance was Clark's first WNBA game since July 15, 2025, after injuries limited her to 13 games last season.

Clark also made history in a win over the Seattle Storm on May 17 as the Fever picked up their first home win of the season. It was Clark’s 12th game this season with at least 20 points and 10 assists, breaking her own WNBA record for most in league history. Second on the list is veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot with 10 such games in 15 years of experience. Clark technically set that record in the game before but it wasn't recognized until a review found two of her assists were missed in the box score.

Clark became the first player in WNBA history to record at least 20 points and 10 assists in less than 25 minutes of play on May 17. It was also her fourth straight game with at least 20 points and five assists tying the longest such streak to start a season in WNBA history.
