Liverpool's Koumas promises to show worth with Wales

The attacker helped Hull City win promotion before returning to parent club Liverpool and has won 11 senior caps for Wales.

But the gifted youngster is humble enough to know that his journey in football has only just begun especially with his national team. "“I don’t think [Wales fans] have seen much of me yet to be honest,” he told BBC Sport Wales ahead of his side’s fixtures in June.

Koumas, who had promised to show Welsh fans what he is all about, did exactly that as he headed Neco Williams’ cross into the net in the dying minutes to snatch Wales a 1-1 draw with Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

It meant he had his goal account up and running almost exactly two years on from his first appearance on the international stage under Robert Page against Gibraltar in June 2024.

Koumas, son of ex-Wales midfielder Jason Koumas, has been a regular in squads under current boss Craig Bellamy and the aim now is to force his way into the starting 11 on a regular basis.“I think he’s a really good coach, he’s really, really supportive,” Koumas said of Bellamy.“Ultimately I like to try and see what I can take from his game and put it into mine because he was a top, top player and he scored goals and that's exactly what I want to do.“He’s a great role model to work off and being around him day-to-day here when I get called up to camp is a blessing.”

New boss to impress after Hull glory

Koumas spent the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Birmingham City, where he made 25 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.

Koumas’ stint at Hull in the second half of the campaign was more profitable as he scored three times in 19 games in all competitions to help the Tigers into the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

"It's one of the best days of my life for sure and memories that will stay with me forever," said Koumas of Hull's post-Wembley celebrations.“I’m really happy with the way my development is going.It’s been a good two years. “I think I’ve played close to 110 games now so I’m just really happy with how it’s going and just excited for what’s next.

But Koumas does not think the Dutchman's departure will affect his immediate future - with the prospect that he will again leave Anfield on loan.
