The line was designed to be fast moving. Thompson, Klay Thompson’s father and a long-time basketball voice in Los Angeles, did not back off the claim or treat it as casual fan talk.

That doesn’t mean it’s confirmed. Clark has been the Fever’s best player and the thought of Indiana voluntarily moving on from her would be among the most shocking decisions in WNBA history.

Clark also just helped the Fever beat the Atlanta Dream 83-71 with 17 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds. That’s the kind of play that gives the Fever no reason to do anything drastic and all the reason to continue to build around her.

The fantasy is obvious for the Sparks. Clark in Los Angeles would instantly affect the franchise’s visibility, ticket demand and national profile — which is why Thompson pushed the idea so hard.

Until the Fever prove otherwise, though, this is rumor territory. Thompson’s post made headlines, but the basketball logic for Indiana still points to Clark being the player the entire franchise is built around.
