His car is being followed around every corner by the cameras and the variables costing him lap time aren’t always coming from the cockpit.

Speaking to astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Miami Grand Prix, in a science-and-sport feature on StarTalk, the seven-time world champion explained just how difficult the job of a racing driver has become under the 2026 regulations – and where the blame should be placed when things go wrong.

“The software has got to work right,” Hamilton told Tyson. “Because that’s the biggest problem. Like yesterday, I was losing three tenths of a second just because the software wasn't doing its job. I didn’t realize until I got back out to my engineers. I was like, ‘Sorry. I’m slow.’ And they’re like, ‘You’re not slow. “The software wasn’t working.”

Tyson’s answer was spot on: nobody watching at home connects an energy deployment algorithm to a slow lap. The driver is seen by the audience. Hamilton’s reply was a simple “Exactly.”

The 2026 Rules Make This Problem Way Worse

The 2026 regulations have changed the driver input vs car output dynamic more than any ruleset in recent memory. The power unit now seeks a near 50/50 split between the combustion engine and electrical energy – up from an 80/20 ratio that dictated the sport from 2014 through 2025. The MGU-K’s electrical power output is up to 350kW, almost three times the previous maximum of 120kW. The problem is that the battery storing all this energy is limited to 4 megajoules at any one time, so it can be drained far faster than before.

The MGU-H, which recovered energy from exhaust gases at high speed, is also gone. Without that element in the architecture, teams are now relying almost exclusively on braking to put charge back into the battery. On tracks with long straights and not too many heavy braking zones that equation becomes punishing – and Ferrari has been a victim of it time and time again.

During a straight, when a car runs low on stored electrical energy, the power unit goes into “super clipping”: directing the output of the combustion engine to recharging the battery rather than driving the wheels, even with the throttle nailed. Telemetry data from the Miami race indicated that Ferrari’s hybrid unit was switching off battery deployment some 200 metres from the end of the straight, while competitors such as Mercedes maintained full electrical output through to the end of those same sections, Sunday Guardian Live reported.

Hamilton had already flagged the problem clearly after the Miami Sprint, calling on Ferrari to address it before qualifying: “I think they’re gonna have to do some software changes or something to make sure that doesn’t happen going into qualifying… “Hopefully we have a little bit better deployment and yeah the set up is in the wrong place, definitely will make some big changes going into qualifying.”

It’s not a Ferrari thing, just. Hamilton agreed: “It’s hard for the fans to really understand and it’s hard for us to understand because the ultimate goal when you’re driving a Formula 1 car is to push the car to the limit. The paradox of 2026 is that the more you drive through a high-speed corner – the type of committed driving fans come to watch – the more it can hurt a driver’s position by leaving the battery undercharged for the straight that follows. “If you do the high speed fast, if you got more committed and you take more risk and you go faster through a corner, you get penalised afterwards because you don’t charge enough,” said Hamilton.

Marc Gené, a former Ferrari driver now running the Ferrari Driver Academy, explained the structural tension:

The software will tell you, for each car, the best way to use the energy. “But on race day… the driver makes the decision how to… where to attack, where not to attack.” This in theory gives drivers agency. In practice, it is the driver who has to apologize to his engineers for bad software behavior.

Hamilton sits third in the drivers’ standings on 147 points, behind Mercedes pair George Russell (154) and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli (179). In June he scored his first win of the 2026 season in Barcelona. However, the hidden tax of software instability – in addition to the inherent complexity of managing energy across 50-plus laps – is a variable that no amount of driver skill can fully overcome. And when it's three-tenths in one session, it's harder to explain the gap between where Hamilton should be and where the timing sheet says he is to anyone watching from the outside.

This is not a criticism of the regulations. “Formula 1 has always been a sport where engineering and driving ability are intertwined, and the 2026 rules are a genuine effort to make racing less predictable and overtaking more frequent. But Hamilton’s point is a good one. When the car loses time because of a bug in deployment, it’s the driver who has to live with the headline.
