Bangladesh leave Australia reeling at 183-8 at tea

Australia batsman Steve Smith scored a defiant half-century but Bangladesh's depleted attack produced another four-wicket session to reduce the hosts to 183 for eight at tea on day one of the first test in Darwin on Thursday. The visitors' three quicks shared all eight wickets, with Hasan Mahmud taking four, while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain claimed two apiece.

Australia lost three wickets before scoring a run in the second session, slumping from 74 for four at lunch to 101 for seven. Smith, who reached his 33rd test half-century, was the only batsman to show sustained resistance, remaining unbeaten on 67 at the break.

The collapse began when Mitchell Starc was caught behind off Hasan for 12, followed by Nathan Lyon edging Taskin for a duck. Pat Cummins then fell to Ebadot, caught at slip for 15, leaving Australia in deep trouble at 116 for eight.

Smith has added 67 runs with the tail, putting on 42 with Scott Boland (12 not out) and 25 with Josh Hazlewood (six not out) to prevent a complete capitulation. The pair have frustrated Bangladesh's bowlers, who had earlier looked set to bowl Australia out for under 150.

Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, finishing the day with figures of 4-49 from 17 overs. His spell included the key wickets of Travis Head (22) and Marnus Labuschagne (1), who both fell to outswingers in the first session.

Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain provided excellent support, with Taskin taking 2-38 from 14 overs and Ebadot claiming 2-44 from 13.2 overs. The trio exploited the conditions at Marrara Oval, bowling tight lines and extracting movement from the pitch.

Australia's top order failed to capitalise on a good start, with Jake Weatherald (23) and Travis Head (22) falling in the first session. Cameron Green (13) and Alex Carey (19) also contributed before falling to Bangladesh's disciplined bowling attack.

The visitors will resume on day two with Australia still 31 runs behind Bangladesh's first innings total of 214. Smith and Boland will need to add significantly more runs if Australia is to avoid a first-innings deficit
