Satterthwaite to coach Canterbury Women in New Zealand domestic season

Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has been appointed head coach of her domestic team Canterbury. With the appointment, she is the only female head coach of a domestic team in New Zealand for the upcoming summer.

Satterthwaite takes charge of the side she last featured for in the 2023 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield succeeding Rhys Morgan who was in the role for six years. Morgan captained Canterbury to two Super Smash titles in 2020-21 and 2022-23 and the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield in 2020-21.

Satterthwaite retired from international cricket in 2022 and took up her first major coaching role as assistant coach of Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL. She retired from New Zealand domestic cricket after the 2022–23 season. She’d been appointed the female pathway lead at Canterbury in December last year.

Satterthwaite retired from playing after the 2022-23 domestic one-day final finishing as Canterbury's overall leading run-scorer with 5147 runs in 20 years. Since then she has been overtaken by Frankie Mackay. Satterthwaite continues to be at the top of the T20 charts having scored 2925 runs for her team.

A key member of the New Zealand dressing room for 15 years, she retired after 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is. She is the only woman and one of two players with Kumar Sangakkara to score four consecutive ODI tons.

Brendon Donkers is now head coach of the Plunket Shield defending champions - the men's circuit for Canterbury.

Donkers was assistant coach to Peter Fulton who left mid-way thru last season after being appointed head coach of Middlesex. Donkers was Canterbury’s interim head coach at the time and now assumes the full-time position.
