Lerryan Douglas has spoken out after being on the receiving end of a scary eye injury in his UFC Sacramento defeat to Jamall Emmers.
Douglas entered the battle with lots of momentum after winning six straight contests, three of which were first round finishes.
However, his good run was stopped short by a big right hand from Emmers that felled him in the opening round.
The knockout was obviously a massive upset, but things got more serious post-fight.
Former UFC fighter and Douglas’ coach Cub Swanson said the Brazilian suffered a fractured orbital and quickly lost vision in his left eye.
Swanson later confirmed that Douglas was okay, and that he was relieved the boxer didn't take any more injury.
Douglas is seeing a specialist this week and more details are likely to be known following that visit.
Emmers was struck with a clean one two combination and was injured. Douglas hit the canvas and the referee promptly stepped in to stop the fight to save him any additional pain.
It was especially hard for Douglas as he had gained a lot of confidence from his UFC debut.
He stopped veteran Julian Erosa in the first round earlier this year and appeared an interesting future in the featherweight division.
Meanwhile, Emmers pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the night and he was the underdog entering the match but kept his composure before finding the opening that altered the fight in an instant.
Douglas’s objective now is to heal rather than rush back into competition.
Orbital injuries can be serious and require a lot of medical attention and his expert appointment coming up should give a clearer idea of his recovery schedule.
The setback leaves plenty of time for Douglas to restore his career but his winning run previously demonstrated his abilities and a healthy return might provide him with another opportunity to make his mark in the UFC.
For now, supporters will have to wait for additional information on his eye and overall condition.
