Dana White Sees Renewed Excitement As New UFC Heavyweight Contenders Rise

UFC boss Dana White says the heavyweight class is about to get a lot more intriguing after a period of uncertainty at the top.

White spoke after UFC Sacramento and hailed the recent emergence of some heavyweight fighters and said the company has been attempting to revitalize divisions that had gotten stagnant.

The heavyweight division is beginning to see a new generation coming through.

Part of the rationale for the new optimism is the performance of the rising candidates.

Vitor Petrino climb into the top 10 of the heavyweight division after his win over Serghei Spivac while Shamil Gaziev also scored a shocking KO in Sacramento.

Anthony Wint has been a name as well. The ex-pro footballer got his UFC deal on Dana White’s Contender Series and wasted little time in returning to action for another first-round finish.

White liked the younger fighters’ determination to remain active and take as many opportunities as they can.

Big issues remain for champion Tom Aspinall in the division. The heavyweight championship picture remains tricky, with an eye injury suffered in his fight with Ciryl Gane throwing his title picture into chaos.

But the rise of new challengers could help bring additional choices as the division’s top develops.

White has mentioned fighters like Gane, Alexander Volkov, Waldo Cortes Acosta and Jailton Almeida as major names in the heavyweight picture before.

The heavyweight category has been lambasted for its lack of depth and inactivity but recent performances are changing the narrative.

More active fighters mean more recognizable names higher rankings and more fights for the UFC to build.

That might mean a much more competitive division for fans over the coming months.

White’s comments suggest that what the UFC is seeing is driving the advertising.

If the new heavyweights keep winning and competing consistently, the division may rapidly be one of the most fascinating weight classes in the UFC again.

The new generation looks set to make its imprint and White believes the heavyweight picture is just going to get entertaining.
