Jonathan Kuminga Joins Timberwolves Adding Athleticism And Scoring Potential

Jonathan Kuminga is heading to the Minnesota Timberwolve but the skilled forward will sign a two year deal, giving him a fresh start after a rough go of it in free agency.

The deal is valued roughly $12.4 million with a player option for season two, according to several reports.

Other reports put the total worth at $13 million but the main point is Kuminga has picked Minnesota and will have control of his destiny after the first season.

The acquisition provides a huge boost to Minnesota’s frontcourt after parting ways with Julius Randle and Naz Reid in the offseason.

Kuminga has quickness and size and a knack for scoring around the hoop.

Kuminga was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA drafts and most of his early career was spent with Golden State although he was traded to Atlanta during the 2025-26 season.

Throughout his career the 23-year-old has shown significant promise but he posted a career high 16.1 points per game in the 2023-24 season displaying the scoring talent that made him a highly touted prospect.

However, throughout his tenure with Golden State things got more problematic as his role altered and his minutes became more inconsistent.

Another possibility came when he moved to Atlanta, but the Hawks refused their club option.

Minnesota views Kuminga as a player who can thrive with a more consistent role. The Timberwolves need another agile forward who can attack the hoop, defend several spots and score with their existing studs.

The brief deal might be a win-win situation for both sides. It gives Kuminga a chance to show himself in a fresh setting while Minnesota has time to analyze if he can be a long-term piece.

For Kuminga, the transfer is another chance to show why he was once considered one of the NBA’s most promising young forwards.
