Conor McGregor’s future in combat sports remains uncertain after another loss raised questions about his UFC comeback.
In his return bout against Max Holloway, the former two-division champ suffered a devastating knee injury.
McGregor hurt his ACL and meniscus attempting a kick early on and the match lasted barely 69 seconds. Later, he had a successful surgery and started to heal.
McGregor has made it plain he doesn’t want the injury to terminate his career.
He’s looking to fight at International Fight Week in 2027, which could be the final bout of his current UFC deal.
But there has also been a focus on the opportunities outside the UFC.
McGregor has already expressed interest in boxing and crossover events and after he recovers, another appearance in a combat sport is feasible and his name would draw a lot of attention especially if the fight was against a big name or under unusual conditions.
No non-UFC fight has been officially confirmed for now and his first priority is to recover, and UFC CEO Dana White has already said McGregor could be out of action for approximately a year.
The Irish superstar is under contract with the UFC but his future beyond that pact is unclear but reports suggest he could test free agency once he fulfills his contract responsibilities.
McGregor’s career already includes MMA, boxing and a few crossovers to its credit.
Another fight outside the UFC at 38 may open up a new chapter and keep him active in the fight game.
The main question for fans is whether McGregor will get back in the Octagon first or surprise everyone with another opportunity before then.
