Football Association of Wales wants more Wales games at Wrexham Racecourse

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) wants to bring more Wales football games to Wrexham Racecourse stadium. FAW chief executive Noel Mooney said the group would like to use the stadium more after the new Kop stand is finished.

The Racecourse is also known as Y Cae Ras. It has a long history in Welsh football. Wales played its first home game there in 1877. The stadium has hosted 95 senior men's international games. The most recent men's game was a friendly against Gibraltar in 2023.

The new Kop stand will have about 7,500 seats. When the work is finished, the stadium will hold more than 18,000 fans. Mooney said the FAW has a strong link with Wrexham. He said both the men's and women's Wales teams have enjoyed playing there.

But stadium size is still a big problem. Cardiff City's stadium can hold about 32,000 to 33,000 fans. The Racecourse will be much smaller even after the new stand is complete.

Wales games against teams such as Portugal, Denmark and Norway have attracted strong ticket demand. The FAW has sold about 18,000 to 19,000 campaign tickets for some games.

This could make it hard to move major World Cup qualifiers to Wrexham. The Racecourse may not have enough seats for all ticket holders.

Wrexham is also looking at a bigger stadium in the future. Club chief executive Michael Williamson has said the club's ideal capacity could be between 26,000 and 29,000.

For now, the FAW plans to use the Racecourse when it can. The new Kop stand will give the historic ground more space and could help bring more Wales games to Wrexham.
