Duke Basketball Blends Returning Experience and New Talent Under Jon Scheyer

Duke basketball’s roster for the 2026-27 season when Jon Scheyer will be in his first season as the head coach, will look very different.

Rather than relying on one superstar to carry the offensive load, the Blue Devils have created a strong squad with multiple contributors.

Scheyer might play 10 to 12 guys, and Duke is anticipated to have one of the deepest rotations in NCAA basketball.

That’s a change from the past two seasons, when Cooper Flagg and Cameron Boozer were the team’s top stars and statistical leaders.

This season, Duke may have multiple players leading different statistical categories.

John Blackwell (Wisconsin transfer) should be their leading scorer.

He averaged 19.1 points per game last season and gives Duke a veteran perimeter scorer.

At the same time, a number of key players are coming back. Caleb Foster, Patrick Ngongba, Dame Sarr and other contributors provide some continuity that Duke hasn’t always had in recent years.

The roster also contains several veteran transfers and another highly touted recruiting class.

Defence could be another important strength. Duke has length up and down the lineup and guys that can defend several positions.

With a planned rotation featuring a number of 6-foot-8 to 7-foot standouts, Scheyer has several lineup choices.

That balanced strategy may potentially be tough for Duke to defend. The Blue Devils can score with more than one player therefore other teams may not be able to focus on stopping one man.

The issue for Scheyer will be to get the appropriate rotation and keep everyone engaged.

So Duke’s 2026-27 roster is a different model: depth, experience, variety and shared responsibility rather than one guy scoring all the points.
