What does McLaren need to accomplish to win the championship in Azerbaijan? Here are all the possible outcomes...
McLaren has put together such a great 2025 F1 campaign that the team will have its first chance to win the Constructors' Championship at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend.
With 12 wins out of 16 events, seven 1-2 finishes, and podium finishes in all but one round, McLaren is more than 300 points ahead of their closest competitors as it moves into the final flyaway phase of the campaign.
In fact, McLaren's impressive total of 617 points so far this year is much more than Ferrari's 280, Mercedes' 260, and Red Bull's 239.
So, what does McLaren need to do to end the situation at the Baku City Circuit? Below are all the important numbers and situations we've come up with...
How many points are still available?
There are still eight rounds left in the 2025 season, including the forthcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This means that teams may still achieve a maximum of 389 points in the latter part of the season.
There are three Sprint weekends (58 points available at each) and five regular weekends (43 points available at each) between now and the finale.
McLaren is 337 points ahead of Ferrari, who is in second place. This shows how much of a math miracle would be needed for the lead to shift.
How can McLaren take home the title in Azerbaijan?
In basic terms, McLaren will be the champion if the gap between them and Ferrari is 346 points or more after the race in Azerbaijan on Sunday.
To do this, McLaren has to score nine more points than Ferrari.
No matter what Ferrari does, McLaren can make sure they win the race and then finish in second or third place on the streets of Baku.
What about the far-off dreams of Mercedes and Red Bull?
Alongside Ferrari, two other teams still mathematically in contention for the Constructors’ Championship are Mercedes and Red Bull, but with extremely slender possibilities.
Mercedes is 357 points behind the leaders in the championship, so they need to earn 12 more points than McLaren this weekend to stay above the cut.
On the other hand, Red Bull is 378 points behind, therefore they need to score 33 more points than McLaren.
If any of the possible outcomes don't go McLaren's way, the situation will move on to the next round of the season in Singapore.
