It's not common for a school to hire an assistant from another institution to coach its men's basketball team in the middle of September, but that's what Wofford College is doing. Sources told CBS Sports that Wofford is about to employ Kevin Giltner, an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. This comes just over a week after Wofford cut ties with previous coach Dwight Perry.

"Close, but not quite there," remarked one source.

Unless anything surprising happens at the final minute, Giltner is likely to obtain the position.

Giltner played for Wofford from 2008 to 2012 and was on two NCAA Tournament teams coached by Mike Young. Young has been at Virginia Tech since leaving Wofford for the Hokies in 2019. Young was a coach at Wofford for 30 years. Giltner worked at his old school for six years after he graduated from college. He's been on the collegiate sidelines with Young for more than ten years, including as an assistant for the best team in Wofford history. The Terriers went 30-5 in 2019 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Since then, Wofford has had some problems.

The school is replacing its leadership at a time when its men's basketball program is having a lot of problems. On September 12, Perry and assistant head coach Tysor Anderson were fired as the school looked into claims that some Wofford players were getting small, illegal advantages. Sources said that the alleged behavior involved players living off-campus and then utilizing meal cards that are only supposed to be used by on-campus students to get perks they shouldn't have had.

Wofford reported the irregularities himself, and even though there were concerns that some players would be punished, the Field of 68 said on Friday night that all players have been reinstated, quoting their lawyer on the issue.

It all happened after Perry was fired, which was strange at first. Wofford made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2025 while Perry was in charge. They did this after firing former coach Jay McAuley at the wrong moment in 2023. After it was found that McAuley had broken the regulations by letting players work out and practice more than the allowed number of times, he was put on probation for a year. The college in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has less than 2,000 undergrads and is known for being one of the hardest jobs in the Southern Conference.
