HOUSTON — Cal Raleigh of Seattle blasted a two-run home run in the second inning against the Houston Astros on Sunday night, his 58th home run overall and the most in MLB history.
Raleigh, hitting left-handed, connected off Jason Alexander for his home run to right field to extend the Mariners' advantage, which was 5-0 after a grand slam by J.P. Crawford in the second.
He hit his 57th home run the previous evening, surpassing Ken Griffey Jr. for the team's single-season home run record. Griffey hit 56 in 1998 as well as 1997.
Additionally, Raleigh broke the MLB record of 54 home runs by a switch-hitter held by Mickey Mantle since 1961. In addition, he has surpassed Salvador Perez's 2021 home run total of 48 to set the MLB record for home runs by a catcher this season.
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers and Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies are tied for second place with 53 home runs apiece, five more than Raleigh.
