To the joy of a joyful Petco Park, the San Diego Padres dramatically punched their playoff ticket Monday night.
The Padres won 5-4 to secure at least a wild-card berth in the NL playoffs after catcher Freddy Fermin produced a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning that scored Bryce Johnson.
Right now, the Padres are positioned to earn the fifth spot in the postseason. With five games left, all at home for the Padres, San Diego (86-71) sits 2.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
The Padres were behind 4-3 in the tenth inning when Luis Arraez was hit by a fielder's choice by Gavin Sheets.
In the eleventh inning, the Brewers, who have already secured the NL Central and are leading the race for first place, lost an opportunity to open the game. Jackson Chourio grounded out into a double play that ended the inning with the bases loaded.
In the eleventh inning, the Padres took it from there. Fermin scored the game-winning hit after Jose Iglesias pushed Johnson to third base with a sacrifice.
San Diego is making the playoffs for the fourth time in six years and for the second consecutive season.
