On Wednesday afternoon, it was revealed that Rodney Childers would return to his position as crew chief for the 2026 season, along with an unexpected piece of information. Carson Kvapil, a gifted young driver, will not be a full-time driver in the Xfinity Series, which will change its name to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2026.
Rather, according to Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, Kvapil and Connor Zilisch will share the JR Motorsports No. 1 vehicle. In 2026, Zilisch was promoted to the full-time NASCAR Cup Series.
Zilisch, who has dominated this season in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series (disguised as Xfinity), will surely return to race a few events there. However, NASCAR regulations will restrict him to five races, and he will not be able to compete in the playoffs or the regular-season finale.
However, unless there is some kind of unexpected revelation from here, Carson Kvapil's news is a bit shocking. In the Xfinity Series playoff rankings, Kvapil is presently in fourth place, behind Ziilisch, Justin Allgaier, and Sam Mayer. To date, he has had an exceptionally good season.
Kvapil has 13 top-10 finishes this season and has been in the top five six times. Although a victory has eluded him, he has always been competitive.
Dale Earnhardt alluded to Carson Kvapil being under pressure.
The news on Wednesday was somewhat of a follow-up to an earlier warning. Most people knew that Zilisch would automatically qualify for the highest level of the sport if he continued to maintain his impressive racing record, but Kvapil had to work a little harder to earn it.
Earlier this season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. actually spoke about his two young prodigies in a completely different way. Compared to Zilisch, Kvapil lacks the same degree of institutional support.
He is now under more pressure to win as a result. That victory is still pending.
In early May, Earnhardt stated on his Dale Jr. Download podcast that Carson must win. "Carson's future is uncertain. I believe that everyone agrees that he has promise and that he has something there. If everything goes according to plan, he may have a 20-year career. However, it may easily go the other way, and these races are the chances that we're simply not able to take advantage of.
It now looks that Carson Kvapil will drive in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on a part-time basis the next season. He is under increasing pressure to produce.
